Super Moisturize + Cocoa

By Huda Heidi Kattan

I’ve been a HUGE fan of the entire line from Vaseline with Cocoa Butter, but their latest release of petroleum jelly with cocoa butter is my newest obsession! I love it simply because it provides moisturizing properties like nothing I have seen before and it smells fantastic! It’s always comforting knowing that a company like Vaseline has decided to extend their already successful line into products like this! For any women who have extremely dry skin in areas like knees, elbows, feet, ankles, this is the product you need to get your hands on! Also, women who are pregnant or planning, should use this in areas like thighs, hips, breasts, and stomach! This is literally my favorite new product for stretch marks!! Genius!!

Common petroleum-based ingredients like petrolatum, petroleum jelly, paraffin or mineral oil are derived from the same crude oil that is used to make gasoline. The petrochemicals in these products spread themselves across the skins surface, where they can clog pores and cause skin irritation.

Mineral oils listed as petrolatum (petroleum jelly) or C-18 derivatives are frequently used in personal care products such as lipsticks, baby lotions and oils. They commonly contain contaminants that studies have linked to cancer. UCLA studies links “high levels of exposure to mineral oils to increased mortality and incidence of lung cancer, … melanoma” Source:

Mineral oils are also known to clog pores, forming a barrier preventing skin from eliminating toxins. Repeated use can even set off skin conditions such as acne and dermatitis.

Petroleum Jelly, or Petrolatum, is a semisolid compound derived from hydrocarbon. It can block the skin’s ability to moisturize itself, leading to chapped and dry skin, which are often conditions it is sold to alleviate. While Petrolatum on its own is not too harmful, it is often cheaply produced and the impurities/contaminants often found in Petrolatum are the concern. Frequently, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAH) are found, which have been linked in studies to breast cancer.

Plant oils or plant-based oils are better solutions, because they are more similar to your skin’s natural moisturizers. Those natural moisturizers are called sebum. Some are closer to sebum than others. The plant-based oils that are similar to sebum include grape seed, avocado, Shea butter, jojoba, olive and palm oil. Shea butter is actually nearly identical to human sebum. It’s best for use at night, when its “healing quotient” is most effective. It is a little to heavy for most people to use during the day.
